CE 599 Teams Create Handwashing Stations for Mid-Semester Projects

October 16, 2019

Introduction to Humanitarian Engineering is taught by Department of Civil Engineering assistant professor Shakira Hobbs.

Students in Department of Civil Engineering assistant professor Shakira Hobbs’ CE 599: Introduction to Humanitarian Engineering class recently completed their mid-semester project, which was to build a handwashing station with recyclable materials (such as plastics, metals, etc.) and resources available in nature (stone, sand, branch, etc.). In addition, students needed to communicate the following to someone who may not be proficient in English or literate:

  • What materials are needed?
  • What tools are needed?
  • What is the design and construction process?
  • How do you operate it?

Each team also had to create an instructional video. The class declared Austin Gilbert, Barbara Astmann and Areej Saeed’s video to be the best one.

Congratulations to these students on their impressive ingenuity!
