Assistant Professor of Materials Engineering

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a tenure-eligible, 9-month appointment (Regular Title Series) faculty position in materials engineering at the Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of Fall 2024. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering or a closely related field and plan to establish an independent and nationally recognized research program within this field. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education and be qualified to broadly teach courses in materials engineering

Applications are sought from qualified individuals in all areas of computational and/or experimental materials research with specific interest in the field of physical metallurgy. Example topics of research interest include but are not limited to next-generation structural alloys, metals for extreme environments, and sustainable alloy development. These areas are directly aligned with existing department strengths as well as initiatives at the institute and state level including the establishment of the Materials Science Research Priority Area at UK and the creation of the Metals Innovation Initiative (MI2) in Kentucky.

UK Materials Engineering faculty average the second highest per faculty research expenditures among programs in the College of Engineering, participating in numerous collaborative and single-PI sponsored projects on a broad range of topic areas. UK researchers have access to state-of-the-art equipment across the campus including the Electron Microscopy Center which houses a suite of instruments for advanced materials characterization and well-equipped high performance computing clusters.
