Guigen Zhang Elected Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering

December 14, 2020

Election to FBSE is the highest honor bestowed to a member of the international community engaged in biomaterials research.

Guigen Zhang, professor and endowed chair of the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME), has been elected a Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) by the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering (IUSBSE). The induction of a new class of Fellows was held virtually at the Opening Ceremony of the quadrennial 11th World Biomaterials Congress on December 11, 2020.

The IUSBSE is an international organization that brings together national societies dedicated to the advancement of biomaterials, surgical implants, prosthetics, artificial organs, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. It currently includes societies from the United States, Canada, the European Union, China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia and Latin American. Election to FBSE recognizes members of the constituent biomaterials societies who have gained a status of excellent professional standing and high achievements in the field of biomaterials science and engineering. It is the highest honor bestowed to a member of the international community engaged in biomaterials research.

In July 2020, Professor Zhang was named President-elect of the Society for Biomaterials (SFB), the US member of the IUSBSE. He will assume the role of President at the SFB Annual Meeting in April 2021.
