PEIK educates the next generation of power and energy engineers at UK and offers both Undergraduate Certificates and Graduate Certificates. In addition to fundamental multi-disciplinary courses on Power Generation, Power Systems, and Power Policy and Economics, PEIK faculty at UK also offers more specialized courses on Smart Grid, Power Protection, Electric Distribution, Sustainable and Renewable Energy, and many others with a total of more than a thousand annual enrollments.

PEIK frequently offers seminars and short courses for professional development. Examples of recent educational activities include presentations from our PEIK Distinguished Seminar series featuring Lonnie Bellar, Chief Operating Officer of LG&E and KU, Dr. Ion Boldea, IEEE Life Fellow, Denver York, Senior Vice President of Power Delivery and System Operations and Dr. Robert Heideman, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of the A.O. Smith Corporation.

PEIK also offers workshops and public exhibitions at conferences and events for industry professionals. Examples include a National Electric Code Workshop (NEC and NFPA 79), The Kentucky Governor’s Conference on Energy and the Environment, and Engineering Day at the University of Kentucky.

Power and Energy Experiences Course

  • Cross listed at UK as EGR 649/EE599/EGR 599/CME599
  • Taught during the first Summer term
  • Blends distance learning and an immersive experience
  • Class includes a one week field trip to Kentucky and regional power and energy sites
  • Study includes theory and practice of:
    • conventional and renewable electrical generation sources
    • electrical distribution systems
    • methods of controlling electrical power generation, distribution and storage
    • policies and techniques of how and when electricity is generated, distributed, used and sold.

Global Energy Issues Course

The EGR 240 is a UK core course covering:

  • Basic concepts of energy and power, including types of energy, conversion of energy and conservation of energy
  • The current mix of energy sources around the world, including coal, natural gas, oil, nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal, hydro and biomass
  • Effects of energy on different communities, nations and regions and identify the global inequalities that exist with respect to energy across the world
  • Enrolment is higher than 200 students per year

Course is offered throughout the year:

  • In the fall on UK Campus
  • In the spring on UK Campus and with a section that includes a one-week trip to Costa Rica
  • In the summer in Germany in conjunction with the most prestigious Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
