Academic Status

Students are placed on academic probation if:

1. Their cumulative grade-point average (GPA) falls below 2.0. Students on probation for this reason who achieve a cumulative 2.0 GPA or higher shall be removed from probation.
2. They have two consecutive UK academic terms with term GPAs below 2.0 regardless of their cumulative GPA. Students who achieve a 2.0 or better in the next term and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher will be removed from probation.

If the student has completed all the academic and procedural requirements for the degree while still maintaining an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher (or the minimum GPA established by a specific college), the degree shall be awarded and the student placed in good standing. 

Students may be removed from probation by the dean of the college when the student on scholastic probation has earned 90 semester hours (senior standing), and at the end of a semester or session has a cumulative grade-point standing of 2.0.

NOTE: The Summer Session and Summer Term are considered two separate academic terms and are subject to the same probation and suspension provisions as Spring and Fall.

Students are suspended if:

1. They fail to earn a 2.0 term GPA for any term while on probation;
2. They have three consecutive UK terms in which their cumulative GPA remains below 2.0;
   or
3. Their GPA is below 0.6 after their first term, if the semester’s GPA is based on at least 9 hours of grades, A, B, C, D or E.

Notwithstanding the provisions above, in the case of a student eligible for suspension, the dean of the student’s college may continue a student on academic probation if the individual case so justifies with notification to the Director of Undergraduate Studies. A student academically suspended from the University may not enroll in any courses offered by the University nor take any special examination for University credit.

Students who have been academically suspended from the University may only be considered for reinstatement when they present evidence that they are capable of performing at the level required to prevent being suspended a second time. Such evidence would most commonly include a transcript from another accredited institution with a minimum of 12 successfully completed credit hours.  For reinstatement in Engineering, these classes should include math, science or engineering courses that demonstrate your ability to succeed in rigorous engineering coursework.  

Students under academic suspension interested returning to UK must:

• Remain out of the University for at least two semesters, not including winter intersession. 
• Apply for reinstatement by contacting the college (within the reinstatement deadlines outlined below) in which they plan to re-enroll.  NOTE: The college that suspends you does not necessarily need to be the college that considers your reinstatement.  
• Attend a reinstatement conference appointment then submit the reinstatement application with required documentation.  Expect to present evidence of readiness to perform at a satisfactory academic level through a personal statement, transcripts, other relevant documentation, and potential interview with the associate dean.

The student needs to complete the reinstatement conference appointment, and the dean needs to make a decision about reinstatement, prior to UK’s Admission application deadline. Reinstated students must meet admissions criteria to be eligible for readmission to the University.

REINSTATEMENT DEADLINES

FALL TERM:  MAY 15  Students seeking reinstatement for a Fall term must initiate the process with an academic college between March 1 and May 15 of that year.

SPRING TERM: October 1  Students seeking reinstatement for a Spring term must initiate the process with an academic college between August 1 and October 1 of the previous year.

SUMMER TERM: March 1  Students seeking reinstatement for a Summer term must initiate the process with an academic college between January 15 and March 1 of that year.

Undergraduate students who have been readmitted after being out of UK for two or more consecutive years may return to UK, take 12 hours or more and earn a GPA of 2.0 or higher beginning with their first semester after readmission and request that all of their previous UK work be removed from their GPA. The grades will remain on the official transcript with a notation stating the grades are not used in calculating the student’s GPA. The dean of the student’s college may allow students to receive credit for certain courses without using the grades in the student’s GPA.

Academic Bankruptcy may only be used once.

If a student completes a degree, sits out 2 years and returns for another degree, they may not apply for academic bankruptcy on courses taken for the completed degree.
