RailCats is the UK Student Chapter of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association. AREMA serves as the professional organization for the railway industry. RailCats is an educational, outreach, and social organization for UK students interested in railroad engineering and the railway industry.
RailCats is one of only a handful of AREMA student chapters across the country and was founded in October of 2011.
New events will be posted regularly and include speakers, research presentations, field trips (rail yards, multimodal yards, track construction, etc), and more.
RailCats appeals to students interested in learning more about railroad engineering and operations, why this transportation mode is important, and the opportunities available for students as well as careers in the industry.
The railroad industry has experienced significant growth in the past 20 years. As fuel costs, environmental concerns, and highway congestion continue to rise, the need for efficient railroad transportation – of both freight and passengers – will be paramount. Railroads will play an increasingly important role in the movement of goods and people in the future.
With that being said, the opportunities for careers in the industry have never been better. As an AREMA student chapter, RailCats is closely tied to the industry. Membership in AREMA and RailCats will connect you with endless opportunities for employment in rail related positions. Every year, RailCats will send representatives to the Annual AREMA Conference and Exposition. This is one of the largest gathering of railroad representatives and employers in the U.S.
