The UK Computer Science Industry Partner Association (IPA) brings together people and companies with an interest in the success of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Kentucky.

It aims to enhance the relationship between the department and industry and to support the growth of the department for mutual benefit.

Members of the Industry Partner Association are invited to participate in exclusive IPA-only events. The Industry Partner Association prospectus highlights some of the benefits of being an IPA member. Computer Science IPA Discretionary Fund Information

Computer Science Industry Partner Association Discretionary Fund
Academic Year: 2016-2017
Deadline: Open

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
IMPORTANT: This fund is for projects that are unique or represent short notice student opportunities. It is imperative that the applicant address this criterion in the proposal.

Our department is committed to supporting research, scholarly and creative works and activities. Through the IPA Discretionary Fund, we make funds available to all undergraduate and graduate students for unique opportunities and short notice opportunities.

IPA Discretionary funds are limited, and funding should be sought through other competitive awards processes, whenever possible.

ELIGIBILITY
Undergraduate and graduate Computer Science students.

Only those projects that are unique opportunities or short notice opportunities qualify for funding. It is incumbent upon the student to present an argument that funding is needed immediately and that the project cannot be delayed and therefore funding cannot be sought through other competitive award processes. Because of the limited funding available, an individual may only receive funding once every two years.

Examples:
A student investigator for an ongoing experiment needs to interview more freshmen students during the next month before the semester ends and they are no longer taking Common Year courses.

An applicant is granted a last-minute interview with an individual who is a critical resource and has very limited accessibility

A student’s paper is selected for presentation at a conference and the student’s advisor unexpectedly no longer has funding for the student to be able to attend the conference.

NOTE: Conducting an experiment on a timeline that does not allow seeking other funding does not meet the qualification of “short notice opportunity.”

REVIEW AND EVALUATION/SELECTION CRITERIA
Proposals will be reviewed by the IPA Chair in consultation with the CS Dept Chair.

PROPOSAL
Prepare a brief (maximum 2-page) summary of the project. The proposal must include:

  • a brief description of the project, including the scope and projected outcomes
  • a detailed rationale about how the project presents a unique opportunity or is a short notice opportunity and why other standard funding mechanisms (such as CS dept. block travel grant) could not be sought. NOTE: By its nature an opportunity to engage in research or creative activity provides enhanced and novel experiences for a student; however, this is not a  sufficient argument for uniqueness. The concept of uniqueness should be contextualized to the novelty of the project itself relative to CS.
  •  a proposed budget, with budget breakdown and justification.
  • Student name, email, status (UG, G) and name of faculty mentor

For proposals requesting money for dissemination, the proposal must also include:

  • proof of invitation for presentation
  • a statement regarding the significance/importance of the presentation venue.

BUDGET
IPA Discretionary funding is limited to $500. Funds may be requested for equipment, supplies, travel, and other bona-fide project expenses. Funds may also be requested for dissemination of research results and creative works, including presentation at a conference, exhibit or performance. Awardees are expected to: 1) write up a short narrative on the project to be sent to the industry partners, and 2) participate in the Keeping Current Seminar series and discuss their activity within the same semester.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
