2026 TimberStrong team at work

Last week, the 2026 American Society of Civil Engineers Indiana-Kentucky Student Symposium was co-hosted in Lexington by the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville chapters. Twelve ASCE student chapters from Indiana and Kentucky, including Western Kentucky University, Notre Dame and Purdue University, traveled to Lexington to compete.

The symposium consisted of a series of ASCE society-wide competitions, like concrete canoe, Timber-Strong, steel bridge, 3D printing and surveying, along with local competitions such as concrete cornhole, mystery design and water treatment.

Kasey Wells, president of the ASCE UK chapter, won first place in the Daniel W. Mead Paper Competition, and the UK team placed second overall in the USEI Surveying Competition and achieved an honorable mention in the Timber-Strong Competition.

The planning team was made up of Kentucky and Louisville students who spent over a year and a half planning, fundraising and executing the event that hosted over 500 students, faculty and volunteers.
