In February, faculty and students from the University of Kentucky Department of Mining Engineering received several awards at the Society for Mining Engineering's annual MINEXCHANGE conference in Denver, Colorado.

Jack Groppo, professor and director of undegraduate studies in the Department of Mining Engineering, was named the winner of the 2025 Frank F. Aplan Award, which recognizes contributions that further the understanding of the technology of coal and/or mineral engineering.

UK’s student chapter of the Society for Mining Engineering won a first place award from the Mineral Education Coalition: 2024 Student Chapter Education Outreach. This was its seventh win over the last nine years.

For the third year in a row, UK’s Aggregate team came in first place in the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association NSSGA Student Design Competition.

Graduate student Sina Siahidouzazar won third place out of 63 entires in the poster competition for his work titled, "Characterization and Toxicity Analysis of Lab-Created Respirable Amorphous and Crystalline Silica Dust."
