The American Astronautical Society (AAS) has named Dr. Suzanne Weaver Smith as the recipient of the 2024 Sally Ride Excellence in Education Award, recognizing her four decades of extraordinary dedication to student-centered and innovative partnerships between academia and industry.

A respected leader in aerospace engineering and a lifelong advocate for hands-on space education, Dr. Smith has inspired generations of students and colleagues through her work. The AAS award celebrates individuals who embody the legacy of Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and who champion excellence and impact in STEM education.

“I am tremendously honored to be selected as the recipient of the 2024 AAS Sally Ride Excellence in Education Award,” said Dr. Smith. “She was an inspiration to me, being just five years older. I was working as a young aerospace engineer on Florida’s Space Coast when she became the first woman in space on STS-7. We watched and cheered on each of those early launches.”

Dr. Smith continued: “Although we never met, I followed her NASA career through the news and her academic career through mutual colleagues at UCSD. I saw how her life and career were impactful for so many others. I’m also honored that this award is presented by AAS. I attended my first AAS conference almost 25 years ago. Since then, our Kentucky aerospace programs have supported many students who presented posters and came away with meaningful AAS experiences.”

Anyone who has worked with Dr. Smith knows her unparalleled commitment to her students and her unwavering belief in the power of education to change lives. Her legacy is one of inspiration, innovation, and impact—a true reflection of the values Sally Ride held dear.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Smith on this well-deserved recognition.
