On July 7, the UK Department of Civil Engineering is hosting its first Civil Engineering Exploration Day (CEED). CEED is a one-day event where high school students will get an in-depth look at civil engineering as a career, and civil engineering at the University of Kentucky.

High school students will see civil engineering laboratory demonstrations, hear presentations from professional engineering firms, learn about admission and scholarships, tour the Pigman College of Engineering complex and meet UK civil engineering faculty and students.

CEED comes after the incredibly successful launch of Summer Engineering Exploration Kamp (SEEK) by the Department of Civil Engineering in summer 2024. After receiving applications for well over double the number of available spots in SEEK, the Department of Civil Engineering knew they had to respond to the strong demand it was seeing for civil engineering programming.

"Rather than simply sending web links and hoping they explore the field on their own, we chose to host an open house event where students can engage directly with civil engineering students, faculty and practitioners, and ask questions in a more interactive, personal setting," said L. Sebastian Bryson, chair of the Department of Civil Engineering.

Bryson and the department aim to deliver a "day in the life" of both a professional civil engineer and a civil engineering student at the Pigman College of Engineering.

"Through CEED, we want students to gain a deeper understanding of what civil engineering is and what civil engineers do," said Bryson. "We also hope that both students and their parents leave with greater awareness of the civil engineering program at the University of Kentucky."

Interested rising high school seniors can register for CEED at https://engr.uky.edu/events/civil-engineering-exploration-day. Deadline to register is June 27.
