On April 28, the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering hosted its first ever Capstone Design Showcase in the Gatton Student Center.

The event showcased 56 Capstone projects from over 200 students from seven engineering disciplines. Featured disciplines were biomedical engineering, biosystems and agricultural engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, engineering technology and materials engineering.

The Capstone Design Showcase was created as an opportunity to highlight the incredible work of students resulting from the capstone design courses and led by Anastasia Hauser, lecturer in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering.

“These students start their academic career in the First-Year Engineering program but quickly settle into their individual majors,” said Hauser. “This culminating event allows the students to come back together to celebrate their progress and upcoming graduation. Additionally, engineering is inherently multidisciplinary, and this showcase provided a forum for the students to discuss projects outside of their disciple to provide unique feedback and perspectives.”

Capstone projects are completed by engineering and computer science students in capstone design courses in their senior year. The courses provide industry and community partners the opportunity to work with student teams in all engineering and computer science disciplines on innovative projects. Over one or two semesters, teams of 4-6 students lead projects from planning to completion. Students develop professional and leadership and while honing their engineering skills.

Capstone design projects provide students with an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout their academic careers on a single project addressing real world problems.

“These projects are often sponsored by industry to give the students a sense of they types of projects they could be working on upon graduation,” said Hauser. “Teamwork and collaboration are extremely important in engineering so these team-based projects also provide opportunities for the students to learn how to work in a team to collectively develop a solution.”

Industry and community partners interested in working with UK Engineering students on a capstone design project can reach out to the departmental capstone contact listed on this page.
