As an extension specialist, I believe in finding solutions for livestock and residential facilities including reducing energy and water requirements as well as selecting better structural design and advanced building materials. For livestock producers to make their production system better, I focus on how to improve the environment to which the animals are exposed by providing education on ventilation, energy usage, water and temperature requirements in barns. Often improving the livestock system involves making site specific recommendations based on existing management and research about innovative facility designs, materials, and technologies. For homeowners, I focus on educating on the opportunities to reduce energy demand, how to incorporate generators for backup power, and when to use alternative energy sources like solar and ground source heat.
