At the University of Kentucky, two disciplines crucial to advancing modern society and addressing many of the key technological issues of the 21st century reside in the same department: chemical engineering and materials engineering! Both chemical and materials engineers focus on understanding and exploiting the structure, properties and potential transformation of molecules for a range of essential applications, including the production of fuels and pharmaceuticals, and the development of novel and improved plastics, metals and electronic devices. Owing to the breadth and flexibility inherent to both the chemical and materials engineering disciplines, our graduates are positioned to work on some of the most exciting and demanding challenges presented by as diverse as energy generation and sustainability, environmental protection, medicine and biotechnology, transportation and housing.
