B.S. in Civil Engineering, 1977

Ruth Coleman is a pioneering civil and structural engineer whose nearly five-decade career advanced infrastructure resilience across the nation and around the world — while breaking barriers for generations to follow.

A Lexington native, Coleman comes from a family with a long history in Fayette County —dating back to the 1700s. Both of her parents were among the first Black Americans admitted to the University of Kentucky, and when she graduated with her bachelor’s in civil engineering in 1977, she was the first Black American woman to earn an engineering degree from UK.

Coleman continued to blaze trails in the field as one of the earliest Black American women to rise to senior engineering positions within major firms. She designed facilities for public, private, commercial, industrial and government clients.

Over the course of her distinguished career, Coleman held senior structural engineering roles with leading firms in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, South Carolina, Texas and Canada. She contributed to complex industrial, energy and infrastructure projects across the United States, India, Indonesia, Korea, Peru and New Zealand. Her expertise spans seismic design, modular construction, structural safety analysis and the application of U.S. and international design standards.

Among her significant achievements, Coleman oversaw major infrastructure initiatives such as the design of a seawater treatment plant barge in Alaska and large-scale refinery and petrochemical facilities. She conducted structural assessments following seismic events to ensure public safety and infrastructure resilience, and she applied innovative modular construction techniques to deliver cost-effective, high-performance engineering solutions. Throughout her career, she led multidisciplinary teams and integrated advanced modeling tools to improve both efficiency and structural integrity.

In addition to her technical accomplishments, Coleman has been a committed mentor, guiding younger engineers and strengthening professional development and safety practices across organizations. She is a member of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California and an advocate for underrepresented students pursuing engineering careers.

In 2023, she was honored by the UK Department of Civil Engineering with a Career Achievement Award, recognizing her leadership, innovation and lasting impact on the profession.
