The University of Kentucky Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael T. Johnson, Ph.D., as the new associate dean of undergraduate education and student success, effective July 1, 2023. Johnson, currently serving as the chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the university, brings considerable administrative experience and a passion for engineering education to this important position in the college.


Over the past several years, Johnson has guided the ECE department in expanding the academic programs, growing the faculty and strengthening the departmental research portfolio. He has also been a leader and contributor in several college-level projects as well as the recruitment of several high-level faculty and administrative positions.


In his new role, Johnson will oversee and lead the college's undergraduate education programs, focusing on enhancing the academic experience and ensuring student success. His responsibilities will include, curriculum development, student recruitment and retention efforts, and fostering an environment that supports students in their academic and personal growth.

Johnson received his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Purdue University. Throughout his career, he has earned accolades for both teaching and research and served in a wide range of leadership roles, most recently as president of the Southeast ECE Department Heads Association (SECEDHA) in 2021-2022. His research work, which has resulted in more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and over $3.5 million of external funding, focuses on speech and language processing and automatic speech recognition systems.

Johnson succeeds Kimberly Anderson, Ph.D., who will return to her role as full professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering.
