Recently, students in the Department of Mining Engineering formed a new student chapter of the National Sand, Stone & Gravel Association (NSSGA) at the University of Kentucky.

The NSSGA represents the aggregates industry, which includes companies involved in producing stone, sand, and gravel. The NSSGA works to offer professional development opportunities, advocate for industry interests, and provide valuable resources to members to enhance operations and innovation in aggregates production. The NSSGA Sponsors numerous student chapters at colleges and universities that offer mining engineering.

The student chapter is named after Ralph Rogers, the founder of Rogers Group INC., which began in 1908 as a small roadside rock-crushing operation in Bloomington, Indiana. Over time, he expanded the company into one of the largest privately owned aggregate businesses in the United States.

The student chapter meets monthly to provide students with informational sessions and networking opportunities to prepare them for working in the aggregate industry. These informational sessions include technical presentations about new innovations in the industry and professional development courses. There are also field trips available for students to visit mine sites and equipment manufacturers in Kentucky and surrounding states. Annually, the student chapter will attend the NSSGA Convention and the AGG1 Expo in order to learn more about the industry and make long lasting connections.
