2 biomedical engineering graduate students winners in entrepreneur pitch competition

Two UK Pigman College of Engineering biomedical engineering graduate students were winners in the Women's Business Center of Kentucky 2025 Emerging Entrepreneur Pitch Competition, hosted in partnership with Women Leading Kentucky. The event, held at the historic Lyric Theatre in Lexington, brought together founders, judges, mentors and sponsors to champion innovation and elevate women entrepreneurs.

Pigman College of Engineering welcomes 7 new faculty members

This month, the University of Kentucky Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering welcomed seven new members to its faculty.  Brooks Lane, assistant professor in the  F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering Lane earned his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 2019 and most recently served as a postdoctoral fellow at Drexel University.  His research interests are: 

UK biomedical engineering researchers are editor’s pick

A team of researchers from the University of Kentucky’s Pigman College of Engineering Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering was selected as an editor’s pick for their paper, "Multi-parametric functional optical spectroscopy to monitor the metabolic and vascular changes in small head and neck tumors in vivo with radiation stress," in the July issue of Biomedical Optics Express. 

20 Pigman College of Engineering researchers among top 2% of world’s most-cited

The University of Kentucky is well-represented on a list of the most-cited researchers in the world. In a database compiled by Stanford University in a partnership with Elsevier, 136 current UK scientists and scholars appear among the top 2% of the most-cited researchers across 22 disciplines. Of those 136 scientists and scholars, 20 are UK Pigman College of Engineering faculty. 

Pegah Safavi awarded Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers scholarship

Safavi, a Ph.D. candidate in the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering, was one of 74 students worldwide selected to receive the SPIE Optics and Photonics Scholarship. This prestigious award, granted by the SPIE Scholarship Committee, recognizes students with strong potential to advance the fields of optics, photonics and related disciplines.

Pigman College of Engineering hosts first ever Capstone Design Showcase

On April 28, the University of Kentucky Pigman College of Engineering hosted its first ever Capstone Design Showcase in the Gatton Student Center.  The event showcased 56 Capstone projects from over 200 students from seven engineering disciplines. Featured disciplines were biomedical engineering, biosystems and agricultural engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, engineering technology and materials engineering.

Ph.D. candidate wins Director's Award in 1-Minute Research Poster Pitch Competition

Pegah Safavi, a Ph.D. candidate in the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering and member of the Biomedical Optics Lab, received the Director's Award in the Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship (VACE)'s 1-minute Research Poster Pitch Competition at the Clinical Center for Translational Science (CCTS) Spring Conference, held earlier this month.
